The Misanthrope
Jan Englert stages the classic play by Molière.
At its premiere in 1666, the play was regarded as a satire on Paris salons with their snobbery and hypocrisy. Above all, however, Molière poses a universal question about what lies behind the title character's attitude. What is Alcest's misanthropy: an uncompromising commitment to the truth or a doomed uprising against social conventions? And, can love cure misanthropy?
Please note: Types of lighting used in the performance: bright lights, flashing lights, glimmering lights and fading lights; sudden changes in lighting are also used.
Please arrive at the National Theatre in good time. Due to the layout of the stage, latecomers will not be admitted to the auditorium once the performance has begun.
